Why You Don’t Need to Go to the Genius Bar to Get Your Tech Questions Answered If You Live in Lake Oswego

Who needs the Apple’s Genius Bar Geniuses when you have Lake Oswego Rotary’s Interact Teen Techs? These tech savvy teens are making their expertise available to the rest of us neophytes on Saturday, November 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center. Bring your questions and they will answer them as long as they pertain to an electronic device.

This isn’t the first time Lake Oswego’s Teen Techs have come to the community’s rescue. They’ve participated in similar outreach the last couple of years and are back by popular demand. Questions run the gamut from how to set up a contact list on an iPhone to how to sync devices like a smart phone and a tablet. One Rotary member, Jeremy Davis, who is a software programmer is also on hand to address more technical questions.

The Teen Tech project is just one of 17 service projects the Lake Oswego Rotary’s Interact Club has been involved in. Other activities have included serving the homeless through Night Strike outreach, assembling and delivering Christmas boxes to Lake Oswego families, and harvesting crops for the Oregon Food Bank. Rotary advisor, Ted Ricks, explains that the Teen Tech project, however, “is the one we have had the most enthusiastic response to.”

He admits the teens are a bit intimidated at first, not sure how involved the questions posed to them will be. But once they see that most of the participants’ issues are fairly basic, they relax and do what comes almost second nature to them. “They get satisfaction just like Rotarians do in doing good for others,” Ricks explains.

Currently there are 24 teens in the Interact Club, with equal numbers from Lakeridge and Lake Oswego High School. It’s a community-based organization, rather than school-based, and aims to promote cooperation among the students. Ricks sees it as a nice break for the teens from their otherwise intense weeks that are often filled with academics, clubs, and athletics. It’s also a nice resource for our community, especially come Saturday, November 4. Have questions, get answers at the Adult Community Center, 505 G Avenue.
